Social protection policies for children sheltering on the street

In partnership between the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States - Department of Family and Childhood, the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND), and the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, the Arab workshop “Social Protection Policies for Children Who Use the Street as Shelter” was held virtually on June 14, 2023. This was with the participation of 70 participants from 14 Arab countries representing national mechanisms for childhood in Arab countries, national, regional and international organizations, relevant civil societies, experts, and the media.
The workshop was opened by His Excellency Minister Plenipotentiary Lubna Azzam, Supervisor of the Department of Family and Childhood at the League of Arab States, His Excellency Dr. Nasser Al-Qahtani, Executive Director of the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND), and His Excellency Dr. Hassan Al-Bilawi, Secretary-General of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, during which they expressed the importance of providing systems Social protection policies for children who seek shelter on the street, based on the human rights approach and sustainable development goals, in a way that achieves their best interest, enhances their upbringing and empowerment to integrate into society.
The workshop discussed the reality of policies to protect children who take shelter on the street in the Arab world, and proposed mechanisms for building, developing and activating social protection policies for these children, as well as the legislative framework for their protection, in addition to reviewing governmental and private experiences and initiatives from (Algeria - Egypt - Mauritania), in addition to the number of interventions.
This workshop comes in implementation of the recommendations of the 26th session of the Arab Childhood Committee of the League of Arab States, and in awareness of the seriousness of the violence, abuse and violation of their rights to which children who seek shelter on the street are exposed, especially in light of the current developments and crises, and in continuation of the efforts of partners in the field of protection and preservation.
